Heart Disease and Stroke

Heart Disease and Stroke are leading causes of death and disability in the United States and worldwide. Numerous primary and secondary faculty used rigorous epidemiologic methods to improve our understanding of heart disease and stroke conducting research both nationally and internationally. For example, in the Department of Chronic Disease Epidemiology, the availability of access to large administrative medical claims databases enables researchers to investigate long term trends, patterns of care, and outcomes among elderly patients with heart disease and stroke.
Our research areas include:
- disease trends
- the role of traditional risk factors
- genetics
- biomarkers
- patterns of care
- biological, social, and environmental factors that influence the presentation and outcomes of young women with heart disease
- effect of community-based characteristics on disease rates and outcomes.
