Introduction:

The Yale LGBTQ Mental Health Initiative is housed within the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the Yale School of Public Health. Our initiative provides a home for scholars and scholarship devoted to understanding and improving the mental health of LGBTQ populations in the US and around the world. We achieve this mission through fostering highly collaborative research across schools and departments; sponsoring academic events meant to spark innovation in this field; and training and educating diverse future leaders in LGBTQ mental health research.

Overview of position:

We are seeking a post-graduate associate, holding a bachelor’s or master’s degree in psychology, public health, or related discipline, to gain clinical research experience related to LGBTQ individuals’ mental health.

They will be encouraged and supported in developing applications for advanced graduate study.

Training:

The post-graduate associate will participate in supervised research. One supervised component will involve training in human subjects research, including learning to administer assessments and managing and analyzing data from studies related to LGBTQ people’s mental health, including in our ongoing clinical trials. Consideration will also be given for the candidate to participate in a second supervised component, which will additionally involve recruiting study participants, creating study measures, learning to describe human subjects protections in human subjects protection documents, communicating research findings to the public, and assisting with grant writing and manuscript publication, including literature reviews and data preparation.

Mentorship:

The post-graduate associate will work closely with PhD-level mental health experts and will gain experience in clinical research methodologies and psychological and public health interventions. The post-graduate associate will also gain experience with community outreach and data management and presentation.

Qualifications:

Experience with psychological research, database management, and statistical analyses are required (using e.g., SPSS, R, Qualtrics, Excel). Experience conducting research within LGBTQ communities, or providing services with LGBTQ communities, is required. Other required skills include: ability to discuss serious mental health concerns with research participants while maintaining professional boundaries; ability to consult with clinical research team members about participant safety and wellbeing; sustained focus and attention to detail; independence and self-motivation; organizational ability; excellent interpersonal skills; an ethic of teamwork and collaboration; and a commitment to the inclusion and belonging of stigmatized populations in research and practice.
