To our graduating YSPH students, families, and friends,
Commencement is a moment of celebration, but also a moment of transition.
When I hand you your diploma on May 19th, know that I see in each of you not just your past, but also the future. The world needs both your intellect and your spirit. This year, more than ever, it also needs your ability to create trust.
It was an absolute joy to begin my journey at Yale School of Public Health at the same time as many of you, and to watch you grow as people and as students. This class has of course learned the core concepts of public health, but you have also learned so much more. You have demonstrated brilliance, creativity, and persistence. You have shown up for each other, and for the multiplicity of communities across the globe experiencing health threats. You have not just survived, but thrived, despite the uncertainties and stressors of the past few years.
You now go forth to shape how the world understands “public health”. Whether your next step is in research, policy, entrepreneurship, health care, or any of the thousand other paths that become possible with a public health degree – I know that you are well equipped to link science and society, creating the healthier, more just world we all envision.
On behalf of all of us at YSPH, we are grateful that you entrusted us with your education at this pivotal time for our field. I hope we have fueled your passion and affirmed your purpose. Know that you will always have a home here—and a network cheering you on.
Congratulations, Class of 2025. We can’t wait to see the future you will create.
Warmly,
Megan L. Ranney, MD, MPH, FACEP
