Psychiatry Staff Spotlight: Rachelle Ianniello

Human Resources Business Partner

3 Minute Read

What do you do at work?

My role allows me to support staff and leaders within the departments of Psychiatry, Child Study, and Pediatrics with strategic planning, team building, operational changes, process and policy guidance, and meeting organizational goals.

What led you to this career?

My career has always been centered on a personal and professional mission of helping others to understand and achieve their full potential. The common thread that I saw in each job I had leading up to this one was that no matter what industry you are in, people just need support and guidance in being people, in being human. This led me to organizational development consulting, training, and facilitation, focused on team dynamics, communication, and emotional intelligence. My career at Yale has allowed me to expand on those skills, having started out in the Child Study Center, moving to managing the Employee Service Center, to supporting the university's learning and development initiatives through the Learning Strategic Initiative, and now having the opportunity to support teams and individuals more directly as an HR Business Partner.

What skills or experiences have been most valuable in your career so far?

The relationships I've built at Yale over the past eight years have been the most valuable to me. I've also had the opportunity to be a member of various committees and strategic projects, including the Learning Strategic Initiative, where I've had the opportunity to connect and work with leaders and staff across the university on enacting meaningful change and implementing new ideas.

How do you continue to grow professionally?

I continue to ask questions - always! I also ensure that I maintain and keep strong the relationships I've been lucky enough to build over the past several years. Whenever I feel stuck, I schedule a coffee date - you never know the great insights another colleague might have that will help move you in the right direction. I also keep my eyes open for new opportunities to partner with folks inside and outside of my department, to join committees, work toward certifications, and learn something new.

What do you think makes your team or department unique?

My department in Employee Relations is extremely collaborative and supportive. It's wonderful to work with a team that can all empathize with and support one another.

What energizes you outside of work?

I am actually a very active theater performer and have been for many years. I work with a company in Milford that puts on all-original, comedic musicals, and tapping into that artistic side energizes and balances me. I also have two young children, and spending time with them really allows me to stay in the moment and feel joyful.

What’s the top destination on your must-visit list?

Currently, it's Italy! Dove c'è pasta, ci vuole gioia - where there's pasta, there's joy!

Psychiatry Staff Spotlight will run monthly in the Psychiatry@Yale newsletter.
