We are grateful to Rachel Liu, MD, vice-chair of faculty affairs and professor, Department of Emergency Medicine, for sharing her “why” (or the "Y" as we say at Yale), including the inspirations and aspirations for her role. Get to know Dr. Liu by reading her responses to our “faculty five” questionnaire below.

What drew you to your area of expertise (clinical or research)?

Emergency Medicine (EM) is fast paced, where no day or night is the same and quick actions can have dramatic impact. It’s also challenging when major decisions need to be made, often without much background on a patient’s current condition or medical history. To that end, I became interested in point of care ultrasound (POCUS), particularly its use in diagnostic reasoning for critically ill patients.

As I advanced in my training and use of POCUS, I recognized there were a few concepts that I had memorized for tests, but did not fully understand until I visualized “live” anatomy, physiology, and pathology through real-time dynamic imaging. By that point, I was an attending, which allowed me to bring POCUS training to students and help augment their basic and clinical science learning simultaneously.

Both my work in emergency medicine and the use of POCUS have instilled in me the importance of continuous professional and intellectual learning, understanding different ways people use tools to make decisions, and finding innovative ways to deliver education. As I pivot to faculty development, these will also help me reflect on the “things I wish I knew” when creating learning opportunities in academic emergency medicine.

Tell us about a mentor that has been an influence in your career? What’s one piece of advice from your mentor you would like to share with medical students or incoming faculty members?

A professor from medical school influenced my specialty choice (but she probably doesn’t realize the impact she had on me). She taught me that when responding to certain situations, to realize I can’t change things that can’t be changed, but I can control the way I react to them by taking a step back and evaluating the big picture. It may sound obvious, but her insights have stayed with me, and I repeat her advice often to myself.

When you are an ambitious young physician full of aspirations to “make the world a better place,” it can be easy to become frustrated at processes that seem inefficient, but you often don’t have control over them, so I share her advice with colleagues and students to hopefully help them avoid letting small aggravations accumulate.

Why did you choose Yale for your clinical/research career aspirations?

Fortunately, POCUS training within EM residencies began during my own residency and I was lucky enough to be matched with Yale for my fellowship. Yale already had a robust program, established by a pioneer in POCUS, Christopher L. Moore, MD, professor of emergency medicine. When I arrived, I realized quickly that Yale is a “triple threat” combining disparate patient populations, a wealth of academic resources and expertise, as well as a welcoming culture where faculty truly collaborate across specialties. From my first day as a fellow, I realized I wanted to build my career at Yale. Since then, the culture, mentorship, and resources have allowed me to have a fulfilling, rewarding career.

If given the chance to have dinner with anyone, living or dead, who would you choose and why?

• Agatha Christie: As a child, I wanted to be a detective. I really enjoyed the PBS Mystery! series which featured many of her stories and I read most of her books. I think it would be interesting to ask her inspirations for writing such creative works.

• Stephen Hawking: I don’t even know what I would discuss with him, but it would be fascinating to have a chance to meet a genius, who was able to overcome adversity on multiple fronts to become an international scientific influence.

What’s your passion outside the classroom/hospital setting?

I’m a rower, so in the warmer months you can find me sculling (not that well) in the harbor by Long Wharf, as I boat out of the Canal Dock Boathouse. In the winter months, I try to ski (also not that well) when I can. I’m lucky to have opportunities to combine academic work with traveling, and I love teaching in new places and collaborating with international colleagues. I think sometimes I travel as much as our global health faculty!
