The Extraordinary Coach: Coaching Skills for Faculty Leaders
In collaboration with Zenger Folkman this program has been customized for YSM faculty leaders who would benefit from exploring their personal approach to coaching, learning a flexible conversation framework, and practicing skills that will enhance their confidence and effectiveness in holding the critical conversations that matter. Premised on the principle that coaching is a learnable skills and incorporating principles and best practices from Zenger Folkman’s extensive research and data- on leadership effectiveness, this one-day, in-person program includes:
- A Coaching Preferences Self- Assessment administered by Zenger Folkman
- Development of foundational skills for coaching: Listening and Asking Better Questions
- Learn a practical, widely applicable framework for coaching conversations called FUEL
- Frame the conversation
- Understand the current state
- Explore the desired state
- Lay out a success plan
- Realistic, real-time practice
- Resources including coaching guides and “The Extraordinary Coach” by John H. Zenger and Kathleen Stinnett (McGraw Hill)
- Post-program support for skills refinement
This program is offered several times per year on the Yale School of Medicine Campus. There is no charge for this program.

Develop Self-Awareness: Through the Coaching Preferences Self-Assessment participants identify their personal preferences toward coaching and receive the data and insights they need to explore areas that might require adjustment in as they develop their coaching mindset and skills.
Realistic and Ample FUEL Practice: Zenger Folkman’s FUEL model is a conversation framework structured enough to provide consistency; yet flexible enough to adapt to various types of conversations. Participants practice the FUEL model with real-life scenarios, receive real-time feedback from learning partners, , and create a plan to achieve specific goals to improve their coaching conversations.
Individual Development Plan with Sustainment: Post-session support through consultation, additional resources and options for additional feedback are designed to keep coaching and the FUEL model top of mind.
The Extraordinary Coach: Coaching Skills for Faculty Leaders is a full-day program offered in a small group setting, with several sessions offered throughout the year. Breakfast and lunch are provided. There is no charge to the Department or the participant for this program.
