Two representatives from the Department of Surgery were recognized at the annual Association for Surgical Education (ASE) conference on April 29, 2026, in Atlanta for their contributions to surgical education and research.
Stephanie Carter, MD, a third-year general surgery resident, received the ASE Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee Award and Scholarship. She was nominated by Paris Butler, MD, MPH, and Felix Lui, MD, in recognition of her commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in surgical education.
Elena Wilson, a fourth-year MD-PhD medical student, received the Promising Medical Student Surgery Education Research Award. She was nominated by John Encandela, PhD, Felix Lui, MD, and Danette Morrison for her work on the Surgery Multispecialty Rotation Pilot, which aims to provide medical students with exposure to more surgical specialties.
These awards highlight the contributions of residents and medical students to surgical training and to fostering a more inclusive learning environment.
