Deputy Dean for Professionalism and Leadership Development

The deputy dean for professionalism and leadership development advances Yale School of Medicine’s efforts to promote faculty professionalism, develop faculty leaders, and elevate faculty wellness. In this role the deputy dean reports to the dean of Yale School of Medicine and oversees an experienced Academic Professionalism and Leadership Team. The deputy dean collaborates extensively with others across the university and Yale New Haven Health System, including Yale Office of Institutional Equity & Accessibility, the Title IX Office, members of the Office of General Counsel, fellow deputy deans, department chairs and section chiefs, the senior associate dean for Graduate Medical Education, and colleagues in YNHHS including the Medical Staff Professionalism Committees at each delivery network hospital.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and refine processes to address professionalism concerns reported to OAPD, the university hotline, or through YNHHS.
    • Conduct and oversee intakes with faculty, staff, or trainees who report concerns to understand the nature of the concerns, conduct fact finding, develop pathways to address concerns, and provide follow-up to the extent possible.
  • Continue to develop and improve upon (Standard Operating Procedures) to ensure that matters related to professionalism are reviewed and addressed in a consistent manner, across Yale School of Medicine and within YSM and YNHHS.
  • In collaboration with chairs, the dean, and general counsel ensure that faculty are held accountable for professionalism and adherence to Yale Standards of Faculty Conduct.
    • Support chairs and other faculty leaders as they address faculty professionalism concerns in entities they lead. Conduct fact finding when needed and provide options for appropriate interventions and remediation plans that can be implemented in a timely, consistent and fair manner and that comply with university policy, precedent, and employment law.
  • Oversee leadership development targeted at section chiefs and incoming chairs and, as developmentally appropriate, for other faculty.
  • Communicate with faculty at orientation and throughout the year to familiarize them with the values of YSM and the work of OAPD.
  • Develop metrics that describe patterns of concerns and identify systemic issues.
  • Develop processes to promote and celebrate positive behaviors of faculty.
  • Develop high-impact courses and grand rounds that inspire YSM faculty to become better leaders and provide them with the tools to contribute to the future leadership of the school.
  • Assist faculty leaders to utilize coaching skills in interactions with faculty and trainees, including during one-on-one meetings to review the Faculty Development Annual Questionnaire (FDAQ).
  • Develop programs that promote faculty wellbeing by addressing individual resilience and by improving YSM and departmental organizational culture.
  • Advance high quality programs to improve communication skills and performance at work and to address community mental health and wellbeing needs.

Qualifications

  • The ideal candidate will have served as a faculty leader with experience in overseeing the career development and performance of trainees or faculty.
  • The candidate should have a track record of the highest level of professionalism, exemplifying the values of Yale School of Medicine.
  • The candidate should have administrative skills and experience in developing and implementing procedures and policies.
  • The candidate should be knowledgeable about resources and interventions to promote wellbeing.
  • The candidate should have experience with coaching, setting expectations, and developing and implementing remediation plans.
