Advocacy and Policy

Our program works at the intersection of science, policy, and community engagement. We collaborate with advocacy organizations, community leaders, and lawmakers to translate research into real-world impact—especially for high-risk and underserved populations.

This section highlights our core legislative efforts, strategic partnerships, and community-facing activities that reflect our commitment to prevention, equity, and systemic change.

A. Legislation: The Stomach Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Act

Why it matters:

Stomach cancer remains one of the deadliest yet preventable cancers. In the U.S., the five-year survival rate is just 36%, compared to over 70% in countries like Korea and Japan with national screening programs. This disparity underscores the urgent need for structured prevention and early detection in the U.S.

Our role:

The Yale Gastric Cancer Prevention and Screening Program has contributed key research, implementation models, and policy engagement that shaped the rationale for this legislation—including work on H. pylori screening, risk modeling, and immigrant health disparities.

Yale Gastric Cancer Program

Our program anchors these efforts by integrating prevention science with national outreach, policy development, and community-engaged implementation.

Stomach Cancer Task Force (SCTF) (Website under development)

A strategic ally in federal and grassroots advocacy. Joint efforts include:

  • Co-developing the Stomach Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Act
  • Coordinating public education campaigns and legislative engagement

Korean Community Services (KCS)

kcsny.org - A key partner in our community screening initiatives. Together, we’ve launched:

  • Navigator-supported H. pylori screening
  • Bilingual outreach and education in Korean American communities

Hope for Stomach Cancer

stocan.org - Partnered with Yale to co-lead the first U.S. Congressional Forum on Gastric Cancer (May 2023), bringing survivors, physicians, and lawmakers together to spotlight disparities and drive federal attention.

Debbie’s Dream Foundation (DDF)

debbiesdream.org - Hosted a national webinar featuring Dr. Chul Hyun on early detection and immigrant health disparities.

NexBioHealth (Media Partner)

nexbiohealth.org - Our media and outreach partner, NexBioHealth helps translate our work into compelling, community-facing content.
