Dear Alumni,
After nearly a dozen fulfilling years at the helm of the Department of Internal Medicine, I will be stepping away from the role of Chair at the end of this month. This transition affords me the opportunity to dedicate more time to my research and accelerate the clinical translation of our scientific discoveries.
As my tenure ends, I reflect with immense pride on our collective achievements: advancing groundbreaking research, educating future leaders in medicine, and delivering exceptional patient care — all while nurturing a culture of collaboration and respect. A snapshot of these successes can be found in our most recent Department of Medicine annual report.
I am thrilled to share that Wolfram Goessling, MD, PhD, will assume the position of chair effective September 1, 2025. Dr. Goessling is a thoughtful leader, and I have full confidence that under his guidance, the department will reach even greater heights. Please join me in wholeheartedly supporting him.
While I leave this role with deep gratitude, my dedication to our institution’s mission remains steadfast. I will continue serving as Vice Provost for Faculty Development at the university, and I look forward to spending more time in my laboratory, where our team will increase efforts to turn basic science discoveries into practical therapeutic options for patients.
Leading this exceptional department has been a true honor of my career. Thank you for your partnership and dedication over the past 12 years — I’m looking forward to the journey ahead.
With warm regards,
Gary V. Désir, MD
