Clinical Care
Overview
Mary Cunnion, MD, FACS, is a trauma and critical care surgeon who cares for people with life-threatening injuries and surgical emergencies. She treats patients who have been in serious accidents, have complex abdominal problems, or need intensive care after major surgery.
Dr. Cunnion manages a wide range of urgent and emergency conditions, including injuries from falls and car crashes, serious infections inside the abdomen, and complications after surgery. She also provides surgical critical care, which means she cares for patients in the intensive care unit who need close monitoring, breathing support, or help for failing organs. She works as part of a team, coordinating care with other specialists to support patients and their families during very stressful times.
As an assistant professor at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Cunnion is involved in teaching the next generation of surgeons and critical care doctors. She helps train residents and fellows in trauma surgery and surgical critical care, with a focus on practical decision-making, teamwork, and communication in high-pressure situations.
Dr. Cunnion earned her medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She completed her residency in general surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Mercy and went on to complete a fellowship in surgical critical care at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
