Women’s Health Research at Yale Pilot Project Program Award Cycle Now Open

Since 1998, Women’s Health Research at Yale’s signature Pilot Project Program has provided critical seed funding for Yale faculty examining sex differences across health in conditions that affect women differently, disproportionately, and uniquely. Our program serves as an incubator for catalyzing new approaches to understanding the health of women, and/or the influence of sex differences on health, consistent with the NIH definition. The 2025-26 application process is now open.

Biomedical Research Saves Human Lives

The last half of the 20th century saw a sea change in our capacity to fight disease and improve health. The bedrock for this development was the consistent support for biomedical research, and the nation has benefited from scientific discoveries that have been translated into treatments for previously untreatable conditions. Since our inception in 1998, Women’s Health Research at Yale (WHRY) has initiated and supported such research on health conditions that directly affect communities all over the country. In particular, we have focused on advancing our understanding of women’s health and on sex differences in health and disease that inform our understanding and treatment of disorders in women and men.

Recent research from the Gupta Lab, led by Serrena Singh and supervised by Vikas Gupta, MD, PhD, assistant professor of medicine (digestive diseases), provides insights into the extrahepatic bile ducts. These bile ducts outside of the liver are a critical but poorly understood component of the human digestive system. This study, which was published in the journal Development Cell, marks a significant step forward in understanding diseases affecting these ducts, such as primary sclerosing cholangitis and cholangiocarcinoma.

Investigators from Yale and Mount Sinai schools of medicine studied the neural activity of 28 people diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). They found that autobiographical memories for sad and neutral memories are processed differently in the brain than for traumatic memories. The findings were published in Nature Neuroscience.
Angiodysplasia, a type of benign vascular lesion made up of dilated blood vessels, is a common source of gastrointestinal bleeding from the small intestine. A recent editorial from Yale Internal Medicine’s Loren Laine, MD, professor of medicine and chief of digestive diseases, in the New England Journal of Medicine highlights novel findings from a recent multicenter, double-blind, randomized clinical trial evaluating thalidomide in the treatment of angiodysplasia-related bleeding.

A new study reveals significant insights into the challenges that can occur for hepatitis C virus (HCV) micro-elimination efforts in people with HIV (PWH). Due to the opioid epidemic, the prevalence of co-infection with HIV and HCV has been increasing. If left untreated, HCV infection can lead to liver damage, cancer, and death. Although HIV requires lifelong therapy, HCV can be cured with a few months of oral medications.

Improving Heart Bypass Surgery Recovery for Women Takes Innovation and Representation in Research

Twenty years after a study funded by Women's Health Research at Yale uncovered that women face the risk of poorer outcomes after heart bypass surgery, new research finds the increased risk for women persists despite improved overall outcomes. But, with increased representation of women in clinical research and innovation in targets of study, we can overcome the gender gap.

Study: Purpose in Life and Social Connection Protect Against Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors During COVID-19 Pandemic

Research has shown that U.S. veterans are at high risk for suicidal thoughts and behaviors and death by suicide. In fact, prior to the pandemic in 2019, veterans accounted for 12 percent of all suicide deaths despite accounting for approximately 6 percent of the total population. A new study led by National Center for PTSD and Yale researchers analyzed data from a nationally representative sample of U.S. veterans to understand how the COVID-19 pandemic may have led to changes in suicidal thoughts and behaviors. The results were published online April 5 in JAMA Psychiatry.
