    Overview

XueWei Zhang, MD, MPH, is an anesthesiologist who cares for adults before, during, and after surgery. She provides anesthesia to keep patients safe and comfortable and focuses on regional anesthesia, which uses numbing medicine around nerves to control pain in specific areas of the body.

Dr. Zhang’s clinical work includes planning and delivering anesthesia for a wide range of operations, from routine procedures to more complex surgeries. She uses techniques such as peripheral nerve blocks, which numb a limb or region, to help manage pain after surgery and reduce the need for strong pain medicines. She carefully reviews each patient’s medical history and works with the surgical team to design an anesthesia plan that fits the individual’s needs and health conditions.

As an assistant professor at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Zhang is involved in medical education and research focused on regional anesthesia and training. Her work includes studying how to best assess residents’ skills in performing ultrasound-guided nerve blocks and written tests in regional anesthesia, with the goal of improving how future anesthesiologists learn and are evaluated.

Dr. Zhang earned her medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine and a graduate degree in public health from Yale University School of Public Health. She completed an internship in surgery at Stamford Hospital, followed by a residency in anesthesiology at Westchester Medical Center. She then pursued fellowship training in regional anesthesiology and acute pain medicine at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and has also completed additional education-focused fellowships and courses at Yale School of Medicine.
