On July 1, Women’s Health Research at Yale welcomed the center’s second-ever director, Basmah Safdar, MD. Safdar is both a clinician and researcher: an emergency medicine physician at Yale New Haven Hospital since 2000, she is a recognized scholar in sex differences in microvascular health as well as a professor of emergency medicine.
With a mission to catalyze research that improves the lives of women, Women’s Health Research at Yale’s Pilot Project Program forges ahead with its innovative and replicable model to better understand sex differences in health in order to improve the health of all. In its 28th year, the annual Pilot Project Program injects crucial funding into research at the earliest stages of discovery into health conditions that differently, disproportionately, and uniquely affect women.
Women’s Health Research at Yale’s 2023 Pilot Project led by Yale Chemist and Investigator Stacy Malaker, PhD, is now complete. Developing Early Detection Diagnostic Tools in Ovarian Cancer was made possible by the Wendy U. and Thomas C. Naratil Pioneer Award, an endowed fund of the Pilot Project Program. Created by Yale College Class of 1983 graduates, Wendy and Tom Naratil, the award provides up to $50,000 for research into women’s health each year.
This summer, The Gates Foundation announced an unprecedented, transformational investment into women’s health research. I see fall 2025 as an inflection point – a time to right a course where just 10 percent of public biomedical research funding is allocated to women’s health. The time for investment is now. Especially when, according to McKinsey & Company, every dollar invested in women’s health research yields a $3 return in economic growth due to an increase in workforce participation, enhanced productivity, and improved health outcomes for women.
Every academic year, Women’s Health Research at Yale’s Undergraduate Fellowship welcomes students to learn more about the field and participate in mentored training opportunities with Yale faculty and staff that focus on sex differences and the health of women. This group joins dozens of Yalies who have successfully completed the program since its start in 2015, the vast majority of whom go on to pursue careers in medicine, public health, and research. Please meet our 2025-26 Fellows!
