Please join me in celebrating several recent accomplishments:

• Yale Urology has jumped nine slots in the NIH Blue Ridge Rankings for urology within medical school institutions. We are nearly in the top ten, now, at #13! I am very proud of all the faculty that have worked together to achieve this great success.

• Wei Shen Tan, MD, PhD, has been awarded England’s Royal College of Surgeons’ Hunterian Professorship for 2026. This is an award handed out to those who have made an outstanding contribution to surgical research and clinical practice; only around five awardees are picked each year between all surgical and dental specialties.

• Marianne Casilla-Lennon, MD, recently received two grants for her research work, including support from the Society of Women in Urology (SWIU) for a study on the “Surgical Management of Ureteral Stones in Pregnancy,” and backing from the Society of Urodynamics, Female Pelvic Medicine & Urogenital Reconstruction (SUFU) for a project looking into “Peripheral Neuromodulators for Refractory OAB in a Predominantly Male Population.”

• Ryan Levey, MD, has been appointed to serve a one-year term on the NEAUA Judicial and Ethics Committee.

Looking ahead, the department will have a strong presence at AUA’s national meeting in Washington, D.C., in May. Faculty and trainees will make more than 30 appearances in the form of moderators, satellite symposia participants, and abstract presenters.

Turning to alumni impact, nominations are now being accepted through June 1 for the Robert M. Weiss Distinguished Alumni Award. Please use this online application to nominate an alumnus who embodies the spirit of our department across all three academic missions and has been in practice for at least 10 years.

Ellen Cahill, MD, PGY-3; and Dylan Heckscher, MD, PGY-4, both first authored chapters in the latest edition of Encyclopedia of Reproduction--

• Cahill: “Effects of Exogeneous Androgenic Agents on Male Reproduction“

• Heckscher: “Direct Application Therapy for Erectile Dysfunction”

Both chapters were senior authored by Stanton Honig, MD.

More than 100 attendees, a dozen health care organizations and community partners, the hosting New Haven church, several cultural ambassadors, and at least seven medical experts - including Yale Urology Chair Isaac Kim, MD, PhD, MBA; Michael Leapman, MD, MHS; and Daniel Petrylak, MD - all came together for a special prostate cancer community rally in December.

The event was put on by Yale Cancer Center's Community Outreach and Engagement team and the Prostate Health Education Network (PHEN). Fifty-four people were screened for prostate cancer.

Daniel Kellner, MD; Thomas Martin, MD; and Wei Shen Tan, MD, PhD, were recently part of a Yale New Haven Health-Yale Medicine wellness event in Guilford.

They shared information on benign prostatic hyperplasia, bladder cancer, infertility, kidney cancer, prostate cancer, and more.

Isaac Kim, MD, PhD, MBA, spoke with producers of The Educated Patient, a health and wellness resource and educational platform created by MJH Life Sciences. In this video, he explains "A Smarter Way to Screen for Prostate Cancer."

Joshua Sterling, MD, recently sat down with the BackTable Urology podcast to discuss how antibiotic stewardship and new insights into the urinary microbiome are transforming infection management in reconstructive practice.

Katherine Rotker, MD, and Stanton Honig, MD, recently completed a new article for their ongoing sexual and reproductive medicine blog. Take a look at Fertility Preservation: When, Why, and How to Freeze Sperm.

Marianne Casilla-Lennon, MD, Yale Urology's medical education director (pictured), and Jessica Patrie, MPH, the department's education coordinator, both attended the Society of Academic Urologists' (SAU) winter meeting in Houston earlier this month.

Casilla-Lennon presented on her work surrounding traveling recruitment, urology exposure, and mentorship in students underrepresented in medicine. Her research and projects, which received an SAU grant, grew out of Yale Urology's annual surgical skills fair offered each fall to Yale School of Medicine students.
