1 Minute Read

Ania Shea, educational administrator for the Yale School of Medicine (YSM) Department of Surgery, has received the 2025 Rosemarie L. Fisher, MD, Excellence in Graduate Medical Education Award.

Established in 2018, the award honors YSM and Yale New Haven Hospital (YNHH) residency and fellowship program directors and coordinators who demonstrate exceptional commitment to mentorship, trainee development, and a world-class learning environment.

Shea was nominated by department leadership for her unwavering advocacy for trainees, educators, and staff. For 18 years, she has been a cornerstone of the Department of Surgery’s education mission. From 2007 to 2024, she served as general surgery residency program coordinator, helping expand the program to include YNHH Saint Raphael Campus and Bridgeport Hospital—making it the fourth-largest general surgery training program in the nation.

In 2024, Shea was appointed to lead the Department of Surgery’s Education Office, overseeing five residency programs, 13 fellowships, and the medical student clerkship. In this role, she has strengthened collaboration among program directors and coordinators, aligning educational priorities across the department.

Like Fisher—celebrated for her transformative leadership in graduate medical education—Shea’s impact continues to shape the next generation of surgeons and the cultural integrity of all our educational efforts.
