Smilow Cancer Hospital High-Risk Breast Cancer Care

2 Minute Read

Smilow Cancer Hospital’s High-Risk Breast Cancer expertise provides comprehensive breast cancer risk assessment, patient education, screening, and prevention strategies for patients at increased risk of breast cancer.

Our multidisciplinary expert team of genetic counselors, genetics clinical coordinators, physicians, and advanced practice providers work together to create a personalized care plan for each patient based on personal and family history, incorporating genetic testing as indicated. After an initial risk assessment, patients who are at increased risk of developing breast cancer can be monitored through one of our High-Risk Breast Cancer Clinics.

What types of patients do we care for?

Individuals with:

  • A strong family history of breast cancer and lifetime risk > 20%
  • Genetic risks, such as an inherited pathogenic variant in the BRCA1/2 gene or other breast cancer-related genes
  • Prior chest radiation as treatment for specific types of cancer under the age of 30, such as Hodgkin’s lymphoma
  • A personal history of atypical biopsies, after surgical intervention is complete

What to expect from your appointments

At your initial visit, you will meet with a member of our interdisciplinary, specialty-trained high-risk breast team and receive a comprehensive consultation tailored to your individual needs and risk factors. We provide a personalized breast cancer risk assessment and a risk-reduction care plan, including recommended imaging, clinical breast exams, prevention medication options, and lifestyle modifications. We also discuss the role of risk-reducing surgery, if indicated.

Our patients leave their visits with their next imaging and follow up appointments scheduled to ensure coordination with their personalized plan of care. We also assist with comprehensive risk-based care outside of breast cancer risk and, frequently coordinate care with our colleagues in plastic surgery, gynecologic oncology, dermatology, gastroenterology, and other specialists for a complete multidisciplinary approach to cancer prevention and surveillance.
