To the YSM Community:
I am pleased to share that Nicole Wise has assumed the role of executive director of communications at Yale School of Medicine (YSM), effective immediately. Since January, Nicole has been serving in this role on an interim basis. Leading a team of approximately 50 communications professionals who collaborate with more than 40 communications officers across the medical school, Nicole will oversee strategic marketing and communications efforts to continue elevating YSM’s reputation and support its education, research, and clinical missions. She also will carry out her existing role as chief communications officer for Yale Medicine.
In 2016, Nicole joined Yale School of Medicine as the executive editor and director of content strategy and marketing for Yale Medicine. Through this role and others of increasing responsibility, she led a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy that established and amplified Yale Medicine’s reputation nationally in the healthcare marketplace and positioned YSM as a leader in academic and medical communications. The strategy included the launch of the Yale Medicine website, which educates consumers on topics related to health, medicine, and wellness, and today generates more than three million monthly visitors and sets benchmarks in patient education, search visibility, and digital engagement. Under Nicole’s leadership, Yale Medicine’s editorial strategy also evolved and expanded to include Yale Medicine Magazine, digital and social media, advertising and marketing, reputation and audience development, and internal communications. As an important accomplishment, she partnered with Yale New Haven Health System to lead a robust plan to inform clinicians, faculty, and staff across our academic health system throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
Across her work, Nicole has been at the forefront of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into strategy, leveraging emerging technologies for audience engagement, content production, and search engine optimization (SEO). She frequently speaks publicly on the evolving role of AI in communications, presenting to organizations such as NASA and the Association of American Universities, as well as at public relations conferences across the United States.
Prior to joining YSM, Nicole founded Balance Health Content, a health communications agency that specialized in brand strategy and content development for mobile applications, social media, web, and print communications. She also served as the digital health editor for the publishing company, Bottom Line Inc., and as manager of marketing, communications, and creative services for Stamford Hospital. Prior to these roles, she co-authored the books, Hyper-Parenting and The Over-Scheduled Child, which were published internationally and featured in Time Magazine, Newsweek, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times. She also has been an award-winning freelance journalist whose work appeared in The New York Times, Redbook Magazine, and Connecticut Magazine.
Nicole has a bachelor’s in communication sciences from the University of Connecticut, where she graduated with distinction. She has also shared that her proudest role has been as mother to her four children.
Please join me in congratulating Nicole on her appointment.
Sincerely,
Nancy J. Brown, MD
