David Klimstra, MD, the Louis J.M. Zinterhofer, MD Professor of Pathology, was named by the Rodger C. Haggitt Gastrointestinal Pathology Society as recipient of its Harvey Goldman Lifetime Achievement Award. The award recognizes Klimstra’s significant academic contributions to the field of gastrointestinal pathology.
Qin Yan, PhD, Among 5 Named as Fellows of American Association for the Advancement of Science
Qin Yan, PhD, professor of pathology and principal investigator of the Yan Lab at Yale School of Medicine, is among five Yale affiliates named as fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), a prestigious honor recognizing his extraordinary achievements as a research scientist. It’s considered one of the highest recognitions in science and commemorates Yan’s contributions to science and scientific integrity.
Yan’s research laboratory works to elucidate the roles of epigenetic mechanisms that drive tumor initiation and progression and to translate their findings to the clinic. His laboratory has made significant contributions to the understanding of the KDM5 H3K4me3/2 histone demethylases and epigenetic regulators of immune evasion and cancer metastasis.
Pathology Contributes to USCAP 2026
Yale Pathology had a strong presence at USCAP 2026, the annual meeting of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, as faculty, residents, and fellows made an impact on the event. Yale Pathology was involved in over 60 presentations, including poster and platform sessions. "It was an excellent representation of our department," says Sanja Dacic, MD, PhD, professor of pathology and vice chair, anatomic pathology and, most importantly, our trainees."

Pathology Residents Serve as USCAP Ambassadors
Pathology Residents Moinul Haque, MBBCh, MSc, and Tristan Jordan, MD, served as USCAP ambassadors during the USCAP meeting. The USCAP Ambassadors Program encourages pathologists-in-training to promote USCAP-related activities within their institution, at various USCAP events, and during the annual meeting.

How Exercise Impacts Inflammation May Inform Chronic Disease Therapy
Exercise reshapes inflammation at the cellular level, and understanding exactly how could unlock therapies for chronic disease and age-related frailty. At the Langston Lab at Yale School of Medicine, researchers focus on understanding how special populations of cells in tissues sense exercise and shape its benefits within and across organs. “We’re trying to understand the multicellular nature of tissue responses to stress, including stress from exercise,” says Kent Langston, PhD, assistant professor of pathology and the lab’s principal investigator.
Katerina Politi, PhD, Ranjit Bindra, MD, PhD, Elected to Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering
Katerina Politi, PhD, Joseph A. and Lucille K. Madri Professor of Pathology, and Ranjt Bindra, MD, PhD, Harvey and Kate Cushing Professor of Therapeutic Radiology and Professor of Pathology, are among eight Yale School of Medicine faculty recently elected to the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering.
Faculty, Student Present at Single-Cell Technologies Conference in Mexico
Yale Pathology presented at the Probing Human Disease Using Single-cell Technologies Conference March 1-4 in Mexico. Rong Fan, PhD, Harold Hodgkinson Professor of Biomedical Engineering and of Pathology, gave a talk titled, “Single-Cell and Spatial Omics to Decode Human Biology and Disease.” Mina Xu, MD, professor of pathology, gave a talk titled, “Spatially Decoding Genotype-Associated Epigenetic Landscapes in Human Lymphoma.” Graduate student Archibald Enninful won Best Poster Award for his poster presentation with Fan and Xu on, “Single-Cell Spatial Proteomic, Epigenetic, and Transcriptomic Profiling of Angioimmunoblastic T-Cell Lymphoma.”
Videos in English, Spanish Instruct Customers on Use of Renal Biopsy Collection Kit
Videos created to assist customers of the Yale Renal Pathology & Electron Microscopy Lab in proper use of the lab’s renal biopsy collection kit have been posted to the lab’s website in English and Spanish.
Gilbert Moeckel, MD, PhD, FASN, professor of pathology and lab director, and Lab Manager Diara Santiago Gonzalez, PhD, came up with the idea after some collection kits arriving from Caribbean nations were not being properly processed. The collection kits are sent to labs, which use them to return kidney biopsies to Yale for diagnosis. The video features William Asch, MD, PhD, BA, associate professor of medicine, demonstrating how to properly section and preserve a kidney biopsy sample with the kit. He narrates each step in English in the roughly four-minute video. Then, for the Spanish-language version, Ian Bernal, MD, pathology resident, translates what Asch said, then provides the narration.
Students Cite 3 Pathology Faculty for Impact on Learning
Anita Huttner, MD, associate professor of pathology; Robert Camp, MD, PhD, associate research scientist in pathology, and Alexa Siddon, MD, professor of laboratory medicine, were recently singled out by members of Yale School of Medicine Class of 2026 as among the faculty who impacted them the most during their time at YSM.

Legacy Tissue Donation Program Contributes to Another Scientific Study
Tissue obtained from the Yale Pathology Legacy Tissue Donation Program was used in a recently published study from the Departments of Ophthalmology, Neurology, and Pathology. The study, published in the journal Neuron, reveals an integrative, hierarchical electrical-chemical synaptic architecture that enhances visual detection and coding efficiency in the retina. The Yale Legacy Tissue Donation Program is directed by Harold Sanchez, MD, assistant professor of pathology, and Marcello DiStasio, MD, PhD, assistant professor of pathology.

Graduate Students Receive Awards
Amos Espinosa, a Pathology and Molecular Medicine graduate student, received a University of Wisconsin-Madison Stem Cell Graduate Scholar Award. It will support his travel to and presentation at the upcoming Wisconsin Stem Cell Symposium. His research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms of cancer development. He is a member of the Krause Lab.
Madeline Mayday, a Pathology and Molecular Medicine graduate student, was awarded the Madri Graduate Student Travel Fellowship. This fellowship recognizes promising trainees whose work advances biomedical research and supports their participation in scientific meetings. This enabled Mayday to attend the “RNA Frontiers: From Mechanisms to Medicine” 10th Annual RNA Symposium at University of Michigan. She, too, is a member of the Krause Lab.
