To the YSM Community:
I am pleased to announce the appointment of Andrea G. Asnes, MD, MSW, as deputy dean for professionalism and leadership development in the Yale School of Medicine (YSM) Office of Academic & Professional Development (OAPD), effective July 1. In this role, Dr. Asnes will advance YSM’s efforts to promote faculty professionalism, develop faculty leaders, and enhance faculty wellness.
Dr. Asnes is professor of pediatrics and section chief of child safety, advocacy & healing in the Department of Pediatrics and Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital. She specializes in child abuse pediatrics with a focus on identifying child physical abuse, improving child protective services reporting practices, and connecting maltreated children with trauma-informed treatment. In addition, Dr. Asnes has demonstrated a longstanding commitment to medical education through leadership roles in medical student, resident, fellow, and MD-PhD training at YSM and Yale New Haven Hospital. Her work has included directing the YSM pediatric clerkship and the Yale Pediatric Residency Program, supporting resident and fellow well-being, and mentoring physician-scientists, medical students, and pediatric trainees across multiple stages of professional development. She has served as the graduate medical education director of resident and fellow well-being since 2019 and is an associate designated institutional official for Yale New Haven Hospital.
Dr. Asnes joined the faculty at Yale Pediatrics as an associate research scientist in 2005 and was promoted to professor in 2022. She has received several teaching awards including the Howard A. Pearson, MD, Faculty Teaching Award from the Department of Pediatrics, the Leah M. Lowenstein Award and the Francis Gilman Blake Award from YSM, as well as the Yale Provost’s Teaching Prize. Dr. Asnes is a member of both the American Pediatric Society and the Ray E. Helfer Society, an honorary international society of physician leaders in child abuse. She also is the incoming chair of the Executive Committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Child Abuse and Neglect.
Dr. Asnes obtained her undergraduate degree from Yale University, a master’s degree in social work from New York University, and her medical degree from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. She completed her residency in pediatrics at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York and was a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar at the University of Michigan.
