It is (finally) springtime! Spring is traditionally considered a season of rebirth and growth. It is no exception here at Yale Ob/Gyn. We have seen the “birth” of a new integrated model for the delivery of obstetrical care on our Labor and Birth unit at Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital. We have combined the former laborist, Yale-on-call-attending (YOCA), midwifery, residents, and other trainee services into one coordinated team. This new approach will better support both our patients and staff, while improving safety.
Several new faculty have joined the department this academic year, including Mary Diana, MD; Mariana Espinal, MD; Elisha Jackson, MD; Tamara Kolev, MD; Sara Lebovitz, MD; Blair McNamara, MD; Ecaterina Monica Moisa-Babii, MD; Hallie Nelson, MD; Setul Pardanani, MD; Uma Reddy, MD, MPH; Timothy Ryntz, MD; Colleen Sinnott, MD; Lena Sweeney, MD; and Andrew Yu, MD. Many are experienced recruits who have joined us from faculty positions at other institutions. Additionally, Sangini Sheth, MD, MPH, has been promoted to director of the Division of Obstetric and Gynecologic Specialties. She will develop our first integrated academic OB and GYN division. In the coming months we plan to fully integrate the quality and safety work across the entire health system, assuring a single Yale standard of care. The department’s research and education arms continue to flourish, as well. For instance, our reputation as one of the leading training grounds for physician-scientists in ob/gyn was recently underscored when Michelle Volovsky, MD, secured the highly competitive Reproductive Scientist Training K Award.
The spirit of excellence and growth extends well beyond Yale’s walls. We commend Stephen Fleischman, MD, on his outstanding service to the field as president of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). Our faculty continue to lead each of the major clinical and research societies in obstetrics and gynecology, shaping policy, and advancing the science that defines our field.
There is evidence of Yale exceptionalism all around us. I hope that you feel it and will continue to rise to the occasion. The world looks to us for answers, and our faculty have always answered that call. Together we will elevate women’s health!
Sincerely,
Hugh S. Taylor, MD
