Pathology, Laboratory Medicine Honor Residents, Fellows in Graduation Ceremony

2 Minute Read

The Departments of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine honored eight residents and 17 fellows during a June 4 graduation ceremony at Harkness Ballroom.

In welcoming the guests, Andrea Barbieri, MD, associate professor of pathology and director of the pathology residency program, noted that she started as director the same year the 2026 graduating residents entered Yale.

“This is a really special class for me because this was my first year as program director,” Barbieri says. “I remember being a little bit nervous and I’m sure they were, too.”

But over those four years, she says, the faculty and residents grew closer as they worked together.

“This is a moment we take to pause and recognize your achievements,” adds Chen Liu, MD, chair of Yale pathology. “Our department thanks you all for your dedication and contributions.”

Brian Richard Smith, MD, chair of laboratory medicine, told the residents that they are in a class by themselves.

“You are not only terrific at what you do at the microscope, and on rounds, all of those things, but you are probably better known than 95% of the pathology residency programs in the country,” Smith says. “You are known and respected by the surgeons, as well as by internal medicine, and everyone else you encounter. They don't tell you that very often, but it's absolutely true because I hear it all the time.”
