A Researcher’s Perspective: How YCCI Supports High-Quality Clinical Research

2 Minute Read

As clinical research has grown in both complexity and opportunity, the Yale Center for Clinical Investigation (YCCI) has been refining how it delivers services and training to better support Yale researchers. Guided by feedback from faculty, staff, and trainees, these efforts have strengthened coordination, responsiveness, and support across the research lifecycle, further strengthening its partnership with research teams.

To offer perspective on YCCI’s support, E. Jennifer Edelman, MD, MHS, professor of medicine (general medicine) and associate professor on term, social and behavioral sciences, shared her experience working with YCCI in the following interview:

How did YCCI help you design and conduct a successful study?

Manuel Avedissian, MD, MS, associate director, research operations, and Kelly Anastasio, director of project management, have been great partners in helping us build a team of research coordinators for complex, multi-site trials in clinical and community settings. The YCCI team matched our research needs with each coordinator’s interests and skills, which helped them get started quickly and keep growing in their roles. The YCCI setup also gives us the flexibility to meet our research needs and offers extra support for coordinators when needed, which has been very helpful.

How did YCCI help at various research phases?

  • Development: protocol development, community engagement, letters of support, and budget development
  • Activation: Institutional Review Board (IRB) submission, regulatory support, and clinical research operations support
  • Conduct: Outpatient program (OP) and inpatient program (IP) facilities, clinical and research support services, support staff, investigational drug services, lab support, and project management.
  • Closure & Dissemination: Protocol closure, IRB study closure, data analysis, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and state reporting, and publication

Mentees have found the support from YCCI’s research coordinators and the electronic medical record data pulls and analyses absolutely invaluable to completing their research!
