Join the YSM Educational Technology & Innovation (ETI) team for an enlightening panel discussion on "Climate Consciousness and Sustainable Use of AI Tools" exploring the intersection of artificial intelligence, medicine, and environmental sustainability. This event is part of the YSM ETI Time Series.
The panel discussion will explore the environmental impact of AI tools in medical education, focusing on the energy demands of AI models, the lifecycle impacts of servers and devices, and the ecological costs of raw materials. It will highlight the global disparities in environmental consequences, where high-income communities use of energy-intensive AI tools burdens low- and middle-income communities leading to environmental and health costs.
The discussion will also propose actionable strategies for promoting sustainable AI practices at individual, institutional, and professional levels, emphasizing energy-conscious use, sustainable procurement, and ethical environmental stewardship.
The panel will be facilitated by Jaideep Talwalkar, MD, associate dean for educational technology and innovation and will include:
- Yuan Yao, PhD, associate professor of industrial ecology and sustainable systems; director of the Center for Industrial Ecology, Yale School of the Environment
- Connie Steel, PhD, program manager, AI initiatives, Yale Office of the Provost
- Jennie Frederick, associate provost for academic initiatives; executive director of the Yale University Poorvu Center
- A representative from Yale New Haven Health System
Light refreshments will be served.
