A one-size-fits-all approach for scheduling COVID-19 booster shots may not be the most effective, according to a new study by researchers at the Yale School of Public Health and University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The best time for people to get a booster actually varies based on where they live and their personal infection history.

Yale Cancer Center gives guidance for cancer patients who want COVID boosters

While most people who contracted the COVID-19 virus are back to enjoying their normal activities surrounded by others, that’s not the case for those who have undergone cancer or leukemia treatments and have weakened immune systems.

Yale Cancer Center researcher Jeffrey Townsend decided to make that dilemma his recent focus. He extrapolated data from many studies already done on COVID-19.

Townsend said the Centers for Disease Control Preventions’ guidelines for immunocompromised patients is to get boosters “as needed.” Wanting to know more, Townsend set out with another researcher to give patients some guidance based on science.

When should I get another COVID booster?

Even as Covid-19 recedes from its position as America’s third-leading cause of death in 2022, it remains on track to be a top-ten cause of death this year with the emergence of new variants, such as XBB.1.5 (representing 84 percent of U.S. cases as of April 1). Given the latest federal guidelines on boosters, the public understandably seeks clarity about what this all means for them. Here’s what you need to know about getting your next vaccine.

Yale Findings Broaden the Repertoire of Cancer-relevant Genes

Following an analysis of over 12,000 human genes, research from Yale Cancer Center indicates there is cancer-relevant importance in a much larger proportion of human genes than current cancer research models suggest. Much of cancer biology research focuses on a few dozen well studied genes called “cancer driver genes.” The new findings demonstrate that a larger number of genes are connected to cancer driver genes and may have an impact on cancer biology. The findings were published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

The future of the pandemic is looking clearer as we learn more about infection

Scientists are beginning to come up with answers to the questions of how long antibodies from an infection can protect you — and what they'll protect you from.

Often Three Days or Less: YSPH Researchers Identify Sufficient COVID-19 Travel Quarantine

For the first time, researchers have determined how long a sufficient travel quarantine needs to be to prevent an increase in transmission of COVID-19 within a country. In many cases, researchers found a period of three days or shorter—far less than the prevailing standard of 14 days—is sufficient to prevent travel from increasing incidence of the highly infectious disease.

Hassler has been a key part of a Yale School of Public Health research team that analyzed immunological data from six of the virus’s close relatives and used evolutionary principles to model how soon will a person become vulnerable to reinfection after they’ve had COVID-19.

If You’re Unvaccinated, COVID Reinfection Is Likely

One of the greatest unknowns about COVID-19 is how long natural immunity can last—and how susceptible people might be to reinfection. But researchers are working to clear up some of the mystery. New data show that, if you're unvaccinated, protection against the virus after infection may not last very long.

Unvaccinated people can expect COVID-19 infections every 16 months, study suggests

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Scholars at the Yale School of Public Health say we still don’t have enough empirical data to know how long natural immunity lasts after COVID-19 infections, but the results of their recent study appear to indicate it doesn’t last very long.
