Will you be at AERA/NCME? Researchers from the Education Collaboratory will be sharing their work at the 2025 American Educational Research Association (AERA) and National Council on Measurement in Education Conference in Denver, Colorado.

Here’s a preview of what you can expect:

How can SEL drive student academic achievement and well-being in the current political climate?

In the symposium Accelerating Student Academic Achievement and Well-Being through Social and Emotional Learning: Opportunities and Challenges, Yale researchers including Drs. Christina Cipriano, Michael McCarthy, Michael Strambler, and Cheyeon Ha, as well as former lab member Eliya Ahmad, will delve into the growing tensions surrounding the politicization of social and emotional learning (SEL) and its potential to impact both academic success and mental health. This session will feature new empirical analyses on SEL’s role in academic outcomes, as well as a meta-analytic review on its effects and the adverse consequences when not implemented effectively. A session not to be missed! Join the conversation on April 23 at 9:00 am.

How do educator and student perspectives shape SEL in primary schools?

The roundtable session Diverse Primary School Perspectives: Educator and Student SEL will explore the dynamics of teacher behaviors and their impact on SEL in elementary classrooms, featuring Yale Child Study Center Developmental Science Summer Institute 2024 intern Maya Steiger, and researchers Drs. Almut Zieher and Christina Cipriano. This session will examine how validating or invalidating behaviors influence students' social and emotional development, drawing on new findings from an IES funded study of K-5 classrooms nationwide. Don't miss this session on April 23 at 10:50 am.

How do families and culture support student SEL and achievement?

In the roundtable session Out of School Factors Influencing Emotion Regulation, Achievement, and SEL Skills, Yale Child Study Center Developmental Science Summer Institute Summer 2024 intern Jordyn Barkley and researchers Drs. Zi Jia Ng and Christina Cipriano will discuss new empirical findings about the emotional regulation strategies used by Black students and their intersection with parental socialization practices. The session will explore the connection between emotion regulation, SEL skills, and academic achievement, with a focus on how external factors, including home and culture, can influence students’ success. Join the discussion on April 25 at 3:20 pm.

What’s the latest scoop on the psychometrics of SEL assessment tools?

On April 25, Dr. Sophie Barnes will present her work in Applying Generalizability Theory to the Adapted Teaching Styles Rating Scale (A-TSRS): Psychometric and Practical Considerations. This session will highlight how practical decisions in SEL assessment influence the reliability and interpretation of classroom observation tools, offering key insights for researchers and practitioners working with SEL data on April 25th at 3:15pm.

What do we know about teacher mindfulness practices in the classroom and student SEL?

The Bigger Picture Impact of Social-Emotional Learning in Schools paper session on April 27 will address SEL’s differential effects. Papers will explore how SEL interventions impact specific groups, teacher mindfulness in classroom interactions, and the overall benefits for student achievement and well-being. Education Collab research partners at AIR will provide preliminary findings from the team’s innovative differential effects meta-analysis, and Dr. Almut Zieher will serve as the discussant, providing an in-depth analysis of the session's findings. This session takes place at 11:40 am on April 27th.
