ACCELERATE Advancing Clinical Care and Empowering Research through Technology Lab

About the Lab

The ACCELERATE Lab (Advancing Clinical Care and Empowering Research through Technology), led by Dr. TedMelnick, is a nationally recognized research program focused on redesigning clinical workflow in the digital era. The lab develops and evaluates scalable, real-world solutions that integrate electronic health records (EHRs), clinical decision support, and emerging AI technologies to improve patient outcomes, clinician experience, and health system performance.

At its core, ACCELERATE operates at the intersection of clinical informatics, health services research, and implementation science. The lab’s work is grounded in systems engineering and human-centered design, with a focus on translating evidence into routine practice through EHR-embedded interventions and pragmatic clinical trials. Rather than studying digital tools in isolation, the lab examines how technology, workflows, and teams interact in complex clinical environments—and designs interventions that work under real-world conditions.

The lab has led and contributed to multiple national efforts to improve EHR usability, measure clinical work, and advance learning health systems. Its research includes federally funded trials and large-scale collaborations with organizations such as the National Institutes of Health and the American Medical Association, with a consistent focus on generating actionable evidence that informs policy, practice, and system design.

As a training and innovation hub, ACCELERATE supports a pipeline of clinicians, scientists, and trainees working across disciplines and career stages. Through its close integration with the Yale–VA Clinical Informatics Fellowship, the lab is committed to developing the next generation of leaders in digital health, clinical research, and health system transformation.

Weekly Lab Meeting

Weekly lab meetings are held on Tuesday mornings. At these weekly meetings, project updates are discussed in presence of a diverse group to encourage brainstorming and new perspective and inspiration for future projects. Fellows, residents, and students with relevant interest in informatics are encouraged to join these meetings to learn more about the Melnick Lab and discuss their interest. For questions, please reach out to Laurel Buchanan or Dr. Melnick.
