Dear Colleagues,
The new academic year is underway, and members of the Section of Rheumatology, Allergy, and Immunology are hard at work in the clinic, classroom, and laboratory. We are glad to welcome our new fellows joining us for this academic year: Diego Cabrera, MD; Elmira Esmaeilzadeh, MD; and Kelly Garcia, MD, in rheumatology, and Jheison Giraldo, MD, and Albert Wu, MD, MS, in allergy and immunology. Please join me in welcoming them to our team! We also extend our congratulations and best wishes to our two graduating fellows in allergy and immunology, Luke Legakis, MD, PhD, and Elena Zidan, MD, who recently graduated from our training programs and moved on to new positions at Albany Med and Shoreline Allergy & Asthma Associates, respectively.
In this newsletter, we highlight the work of Joshua Skydel, MD, a rheumatology fellow who recently published an editorial in BMJ on expanding access to biosimilars. I invite you to read more about him and his work in regulatory science in his Fellow Focus in Four article featured below. In the coming months, we will continue to share stories about our new fellows so they can introduce themselves to our section and the broader Yale community.
I hope you enjoy reading about some of the latest news from our section, including new research, efforts to introduce patient perspectives into medical student education, and a new clinical program to help provide care to homebound veterans. These stories represent just a fraction of the work and accomplishments in our section. For example, Fotios Koumpouras, MD, was nominated for the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award, with a grateful patient saying, “You helped me when no one else would.” If you have other news to share about your work, please reach out to us.
On November 6, Evelyn Hsieh, MD, PhD, will present the Yale Department of Internal Medicine’s Medical Grand Rounds “Second Century of Women at Yale: Emerging Leaders in Internal Medicine” lectureship. I encourage you all to attend.
Sincerely,
Insoo Kang, MD
Professor of Medicine (Rheumatology, Allergy, & Immunology) and Pathology
Director of Allergy and Immunology
