Customizing Your Education

We are committed to training the next generation of leaders in geriatric medicine. Our program’s size and resources allow for a customizable training experience tailored to each fellow’s career goals. In addition to required rotations, fellows can pursue elective opportunities aligned with their interests.

If you have specific goals not highlighted on our website, we encourage you to reach out so we can help shape opportunities that support your path.

Clinical Electives

Additional time is available in any of our core rotations, i.e., home-based primary care, ACE unit, palliative care, and post-acute care.

We also offer electives in the following areas:

  • Wound Care Elective – train with Chandrika Kumar, MD, who is certified in wound care and works clinically as the Director of the VA Connecticut Community Living Center
  • PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) Elective – train with a Yale Alumnus in a PACE setting
  • Anti-amyloid Treatment Elective – train with Marcia Mecca, MD, who co-leads the VA Connecticut anti-amyloid treatment program
  • Private Practice Elective – train in a private practice setting of your choice
  • Co-management Elective – train with a geriatrician on the co-management of orthopedic patients in an acute care setting
  • Bioethics Elective – round with a bioethicist and complete bioethics consults

Leadership & Administrative Opportunities

Gain experience in health systems and nursing facility leadership.

  • Administration Elective – train with medical directors in long-term care, inpatient units, outpatient clinics, and post-acute care.
  • Quality assurance and performance improvement projects in post-acute, outpatient clinics, and inpatient settings

Educational Opportunities

Fellows have access to a wide range of opportunities for educational scholarship, including:

  • Participation in clinical program development and quality improvement initiatives
  • Opportunities to teach medical students, residents, and interprofessional learners
  • Engagement in research and scholarly projects
  • Involvement in institutional committees and leadership forums
  • Exposure to national organizations and professional societies in geriatrics

Research Opportunities

Clinical fellows are welcome to engage with research:

  • T32 fellowship in Clinical Epidemiology Research
  • Regularly scheduled research seminars
  • Mentored research projects
  • Alzheimer Disease Research Unit Elective – work with clinical researchers in dementia at the Yale Alzheimer Disease Research Unit
