Dear Colleagues,
March is Match month with Match Day occurring on March 20 this year. On a national level, this year’s Match included 48,050 individuals who competed for approximately 44,000 residency positions offered in nearly seven thousand program tracks across the US. This represents the largest number of applicants in the history of this program. Among these applicants were 29,437 U.S. MD and DO students and 16,154 international medical graduates. I recall my own Match Day with a mix of nostalgia overlayed with the universal sense of pre-March anxiety that all Match Day participants experience. The event was simpler back then than it is now–a trip to your mailbox to get the results, followed by lining up at pay phones to reach out to loved ones.
As noted in the news article for our medical students, Match Day is much more of an event than it was back in the day. It typically includes the presence of family and friends and the enthusiastic participation of the dean, the associate dean of student affairs, the heads of house, and many other faculty and staff. Match Day represents the much-anticipated cumulation of three+ years of hard work in the classroom, on the wards and in clinics, in the community, and on their research for nearly 100 Yale medical students. Of note, 20 of our students matched in various Yale programs, and 29 matched in internal medicine programs nationally, five of whom are staying at Yale. Congratulations to all our wonderful medical students as they launch this exciting next phase of their careers!
Another March tradition for our medical students is the annual Capstone course which bookends the Introduction to the Profession course that they take at the beginning of medical school. One feature of the Capstone course over the past several years is an annual survey of the graduating class asking them to name the YSM faculty who “impacted them the most” during their time as medical students. As noted in another article below, 17 Yale GIM faculty among the approximately 100 faculty across the entire medical school identified as most impactful. This is a remarkable tribute to the contributions of our faculty to the education and wellbeing of our students-BRAVO!
Speaking of impactful, as is typically the case, this month’s newsletter provides many examples of the creative and innovative contributions of our faculty to the clinical, educational, and research missions of YSM. Read on!
Here’s hoping that the old proverb that "March comes in like a lion and out like a lamb” holds true and April brings us more lamb-like mild, gentle spring weather!
