It has been an interesting six months for those of us in academic medicine. But summer is underway, and hopefully thunderstorms will be few and far between!
One of the best things about this time of year is the opportunity to be proud of and to extend our best wishes to graduating fellows.
Congratulations to Luisa Bernacet Rivera, MD, who graduated from our program on June 30 and now serves as an attending at the VA. We also congratulate Ryan MacLeod, MD, PhD, who has completed the clinical portion of his training and is currently participating in the Yale ABIM Physician-Scientist Training Program. Ryan is working in the laboratory of Chuan-Ju Liu, PhD, in the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation. We look forward to following Luisa's and Ryan's growing careers.
We also welcome new fellows, Justin Dower, MD, and Kseniya Slobodyanyuk, MD. Both are products of the Yale Internal Medicine Residency, although, most recently, Kseniya was an assistant professor and hospitalist at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. Both underscore our ability to attract the world's top talent to train in our clinics and laboratories. Although our section is renowned for its internationally recognized experts in obesity, diabetes, and bone and mineral metabolism, trainees primarily come here because of our commitment to training the next generation of leaders. Plus, we have the best endocrine fellowship program director (Silvio Inzucchi, MD) and program coordinator (Tracy Crosby) in the country—hands down!
Finally, we welcome new faculty to the section this July. Jing Hughes, MD, PhD, returns to our section from Washington University in St. Louis as an associate professor of medicine (endocrinology) with a secondary appointment in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Physiology. She had previously participated in our ABIM Physician-Scientist Training Program, completing her internal medicine and endocrinology training at Yale. Welcome back, Jing! We also welcome Matthew Merrins, PhD, from the University of Wisconsin, to YSM as a professor in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Physiology with a secondary appointment in our section. Matt and Jing were already collaborators, and both worked with Richard Kibbey, MD, PhD, in our section. We are excited to have them join our growing cadre of islet cell biologists.
In this newsletter, we highlight some of the impactful work we continue to do at Yale and beyond. Happy reading!
