4 Things Gen Z Gets Wrong About Tanning and Sun Safety

When UVA and UVB light hit our skin, they penetrate the cells in the skin both superficially and more deeply, explains Kelly Olino, MD, FACS, the clinical director of the Smilow Melanoma Program and a surgical oncologist at Yale Cancer Center. The burn is due to severe damage to our cells and it generates inflammation—that's why sunburns are so painful. "The 'tan' is the result of cells called melanocytes, which are deeper in the skin, that then produce melanin, the pigment that gives our skin color," explains Dr. Olino. "The more we damage the skin with UV exposure, the more the body makes extra melanin."

But a social media post misrepresents case number projections for 2022 and 2023 to falsely claim they show a dramatic rise in early-onset breast cancer — and then baselessly ties its faulty comparisons to COVID-19 vaccines.

Opinion: Dying to have children

Cancer strikes when you least expect it. You may imagine cancer as a disease of older people, but as a physician who treats patients with cancer, I meet young people with cancer diagnoses every day. Cancer at an early age comes along with a unique set of complications; one question we physicians always have to ask is this: How will cancer treatment impact these patients’ future ability to have children?

Why Are Colorectal Cancer Rates Rising Among Younger Adults?

Nearly double the number of young adults under 55 are being diagnosed with colorectal cancer than a decade ago, and more are dying from the disease each year, as reported recently by the American Cancer Society.
According to the study, the number of individuals in the U.S. diagnosed with advanced-stage colorectal cancer (CRC), increased by 8% from the mid 2000s, to 2019. Diagnoses of people under 55 years of age increased from 11% in 1995 to 20%, or 1 in 5 individuals. Progress against CRC also slowed, the declines in mortality of 3 to 4% each year during the 2000s, decreased to 2% during the past decade.

For years patients had their first screening for colon cancer at age 50, but we now know earlier screenings can help save lives. The current recommendation by the American Cancer Society is for people with average risk of colorectal cancer to start regular screenings at age 45. Those with an increased risk may need to get screened even sooner.
