    Biography

Paul C. Kang, MD is an Assistant Professor in the Yale Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science. He also serves on the International Ophthalmology and Global Eye Health Committee and has been awarded the residency program’s Excellence in Teaching award by the Yale School of Medicine.

Prior to joining the department, Dr. Kang was a prominent ophthalmologist in the Washington DC area at the Eye Doctors of Washington. He is widely regarded as a key opinion leader in the field, working closely with industry experts on the development, delivery, and integration of advanced technology to improve the visual outcomes of his patients.

He is a past president of the Washington DC Metropolitan Ophthalmological Society. He is also a founder and past President of the Vanguard Ophthalmology Society. The American Academy of Ophthalmology awarded him the State Affairs Star Award and chose him to participate in their prestigious Leadership Development Program. He has been recognized as Top Doctor by Washingtonian Magazine and Super Doctors by the Washington Post. He was a team ophthalmologist for multiple Washington DC sports teams, including the Washington Capitals, Washington Wizards, and DC United.

Dr. Kang’s motivation to become an eye doctor was sparked by growing up with a blind father. As a result, he has a strong interest in international medicine and is on the board of Health in Sight Mission of Roatan. He regularly leads mission teams to provide ophthalmic care to the indigent residents in Roatan and is currently working to help create a sustainable eye care facility run by local Honduran doctors.

As an expert in cataract and refractive surgery, Dr. Kang has been active in clinical research. He has been involved in multiple phase III and phase IV clinical trials for the FDA with a variety of ophthalmic companies. He has authored numerous articles and presentations and is a regularly invited speaker at ophthalmology conferences.

Dr. Kang graduated from Harvard University cum laude and received his medical degree at Indiana University School of Medicine. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the Duke University Eye Center, and completed a prestigious fellowship in cornea, external disease, and refractive surgery at the John Moran Eye Center at the University of Utah.

Before his career in medicine, Dr. Paul C. Kang founded and managed K&C OPTECH, Inc., a consulting company focusing on research and development of computer systems and other aides for the visually impaired. In addition, he served as an admissions officer at Phillips Exeter Academy, a college preparatory school, of which Dr. Kang is also a graduate.

    Clinical Care

    Overview

Paul C. Kang, MD, is an ophthalmologist with a passion for medical missionary work. Dr. Kang was motivated to specialize in eye health because his father was blinded by a soccer accident as a teenager.

“If this were to have happened now or in a place where there was appropriate care available, that wouldn’t have been the case,” Dr. Kang says. “But my father went on to do many amazing things with his life and was an inspiration to me. When I went to medical school, I found ophthalmology was a good match for me, and the ability to help people see is remarkable.”

Dr. Kang spent 17 years running his own private practice, performing cataract and refractive surgery, and is now focused on general eye care and international medicine. He is vice president of Health In Sight Mission, a nonprofit that provides eye care to impoverished residents of Roatan, an island off the coast of Honduras.

“We are trying to build an eye clinic for the island that is run by Honduran doctors. Right now, there just isn’t ophthalmologic care, and it’s very expensive for people to go to the mainland,” Dr. Kang explains. “In the U.S., cataract surgery is very common. For the most part, no one goes blind from lack of access to it. But cataracts are the number one cause of curable blindness in the world, and impoverished people with cataracts face extreme difficulty. So it’s incredibly rewarding to do this medical mission work.”

When it comes to building rapport with patients, Dr. Kang says he focuses on fully explaining their diagnosis and giving them treatment options, including the pros and cons of each. “I want them to truly understand what is going on and help them make the best decisions,” he says.
