    Yale BIDS Welcomes New Researchers, Staff, and Interns

    The Department of Biomedical Informatics and Data Science (BIDS) at Yale School of Medicine is pleased to welcome the newest members of our community. We've recently been joined by postdoctoral and postgraduate associates, staff members, and summer interns whose diverse expertise spans computational biology, genomics, data science, and research administration.

    We are excited to have these talented individuals on board and look forward to their contributions to the department’s research, education, and collaborative initiatives.

    Postdoctoral Associates

    Zezhan Du, PhD

    Zezhan Du earned his PhD in bioinformatics from Huazhong Agricultural University (2021–2024), where his research focused on developing genome graph-based tools for plant genomics. His work led to the creation of three software tools: EVG (diploid genotyping), Varigraph (polyploid genome analysis), and SynDiv (synteny diversity analysis). He also holds a master’s degree in plant nutrition from the same institution.

    Baris Ekim, PhD

    Baris Ekim earned his PhD in electrical engineering and computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 2025. He also received an MS in computer science from MIT in 2022, and dual BS degrees in computer science and molecular biology and in mathematics from MIT in 2020. His research focuses on scalable algorithms and data structures for analyzing large-scale sequencing data, with an emphasis on genome assembly, read mapping, and sequence indexing.

    Haris Smajlović, PhD

    Haris Smajlović earned his PhD from University of Victoria, under the supervision of Ibrahim Numanagić, PhD. He previously worked as lead software engineer at Symphony.is and earned his graduate degree from the University of Sarajevo.
