AI in Cancer Workshop: Advancing Precision Medicine through Interdisciplinary Innovation

    2 Minute Read

On Friday, March 20th, the Precision Medicine in Cancer Program at Yale Cancer Center hosted a day long workshop focused on real-world applications of AI across the cancer care continuum, from bench to clinical implementation to population health. The day began with opening remarks from Eric Winer, MD, director of Yale Cancer Center and president and physician-in-chief of Smilow Cancer Hospital, and William K. Oh, MD, professor of medicine (medical oncology & hematology), and director of Precision Medicine.

The day was filled with valuable insights and new collaborations, and sessions featured topics such as “AI in Clinical Trials and Research,” “AI in Imaging and Clinical Care, “and a panel discussion on AI in Cancer at Yale. Meina Wang, PhD, a co-organizer of the event, led a group of lightening talks that were presided over by Georges El Fakhri, PhD, DABR. The keynote speaker for the day was Douglas Fridsma, MD, PhD, Co-Founder and CMIO of Health Universe, who spoke on “From Eliza to Claude: What AI in Medicine Still Needs to Get Right.”

“The talks, panel, posters, and lightning talks were engaging, thought-provoking and educational and it was great to see so many attendees across the spectrum of cancer expertise,” said Oh. “Equally important, the workshop addressed limitations and risks associated with AI in healthcare.”

The closing keynote was moderated by Dr. Maryam Lustberg and was delivered by Danielle Bitterman, MD from Mass General Brigham, Harvard Medical School entitled, " AI in Oncology: Designing Tomorrow’s Cancer Care, Preparing the System Today."

Precision cancer medicine is an approach that tailors treatment to the unique genetic, molecular, and clinical features of each patient and their disease, enabling more targeted and personalized therapeutic strategies aimed at maximizing efficacy and minimizing toxicity.
